Newberry volleyball tames Mars Hill Lions in straight sets

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team opened its SAC schedule Friday night with a win on the road against the Mars Hill Lions in straight sets.

The scarlet and gray won tonight's match by playing efficient volleyball. They had an overall attack percentage of .337 and committed six fewer errors than the Lions. They won the first two sets handily, 25-19 and 25-18. The third set was a bit more of a challenge for NC as the team had to battle back from a three point deficit to win, 25-23.

Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had one of her all around best matches of the season with six kills, four aces, five blocks, seven digs and a .600 attack percentage. Niki Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.) also played a great match with six kills with no errors. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led her team with 15 kills and Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) was the leader in assists, totaling 28.

With this conference opening win, the Newberry College volleyball team stands at 1-0 in the SAC and 7-4 overall. The scarlet and gray will attempt to go 2-0 in the SAC for the first time in school history tomorrow when they go on the road to face Tusculum College at 5 pm. They will return home Friday, September 26 to take on Brevard College at 7 pm.
