Box Score

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team defeated Anderson University on the road Saturday evening by the score of 18-25, 27-25, 25-14, 25-22.

Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) was stellar in the scarlet and gray's second victory of the season with a season high 46 assists and seven digs. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was dominant as usual with a game high 17 kills. The leading scorer for the Trojans was Amanda Edwards with 16 kills.

It was obvious that Newberry was in for a tough match when the Trojans came out to a quick 7-1 lead. However, NC kept their composer and rattled off six straight points to tie the set.

Newberry and Anderson would keep the battle close until the Trojans went on an 11-2 run which was too much for Newberry to overcome. Despite dropping a set, Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was still impressive scoring four kills on six attacks.

Newberry took the loss in stride and continued to stand toe-to-toe with the Trojans through the second set. The set was so close in fact that the score was tied 25-25 late in the set. The turning point in the match came when Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas). scored a kill to take the lead, just before Maia pounded in another to win the set.

Newberry finished the set with a dominant offensive showing but they could not have won without the defense of Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). Andrade would gather seven digs in the second set to go along with her game high 22 total digs.

Coming off the set win, the scarlet and gray never took their foot off the gas pedal. They came out hungry and took an early two point advantage. Newberry would then go on a 10-2 run which all but secured a 2-1 advantage in the match. Lichtie, who struggled in the first two sets, attacked the ball very efficiently earning four kills on six attacks.

NC had Anderson against the ropes and fired away in the 4th set. They had an early 10-5 lead, but the Trojans fought strong down the stretch and cut the deficit to two points. Newberry showed determination in this match and it showed when Maia scored the final kill to put the Trojans away. Sales led the scarlet and gray in kills during the fourth set with four.

The Newberry College volleyball team (2-1) comes out of the Anderson University Invitational with two wins and a loss. Next up for the scarlet and gray will be their home opener against USC Aiken this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
