Newberry volleyball victorious over North Greenville Crusaders

ANDERSON S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team defeated the North Greenville Crusaders in their second game of the Anderson University Invitational Saturday afternoon by the score of 25-14, 25-12, 25-14.

The leading scorer for Newberry was Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with eight kills. Maia also lead the team in blocks (3) and aces (3). The top player for the Crusaders was Kaitlyn Pierce (Winston-Salem, N.C.) with seven kills.

The scarlet and gray came out looking to redeem their opening loss and gathered a 10-4 lead in the first set. The Crusaders were overwhelmed while Newberry racked up a 12 point lead late in the set. Maia came out strong in the first set with six kills and .400 attack percentage. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) showed her defensive skills with four digs in the set.

The second set was no different from the first as Newberry came out to a 10-3 lead. Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) had a great game earning a .600 attack percentage with three kills. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) also played well with seven assists. The scarlet and gray played very efficient in the second set with only two errors to the Crusader's eight.

The Crusaders came out in the final set with a sense of desperation. Newberry played well but could not come out with an early advantage. They battled back and forth until Maia buried the Crusaders with an impressive three straight services aces. Dani Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.) stepped up in the final set with four kills including the match winner.

The Newberry College volleyball team (1-1) will have a chance to leave the Anderson University Invitational with a winning record when they take on the host team later today at 5 p.m. Newberry will play its first home match of the season this Tuesday against USC Aiken at 7 p.m.
