Newberry emerges victorious in pitcher's duel with LMU, 2-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Senior right-hander Brandon Petty pitched a complete game three-hit shutout to lead the Newberry College baseball team to a 2-0 win over Lincoln Memorial University in South Atlantic Conference action at the Smith Road Complex on Friday night.

Newberry (18-24, 8-11 SAC) moves one step closer to a Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament berth with the win, while the Railsplitters (28-21-1, 5-14 SAC) are eliminated from postseason contention with the loss.

The Indians took the lead in the bottom of the second with two outs thanks to aggressiveness on the basepaths. Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a balk, stole third and scored when Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) reached on a fielding error.

Casey Sedley (L, 5-5) held the Indians off the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth. Grider led off the frame with a walk and stole second. A groundout by Chad Perschbacher (Makanda, Ill.) advanced Grider to third, where he was able to score on a sacrifice fly from Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.).

Despite Sedley's performance on the mound, it was Petty who occupied the spotlight on Friday night.

The complete game is the senior's fourth of the season, while his second shutout of the year runs his record to 5-7. Only three LMU runners reached second base on the night, while Petty struck out 11 batters, tying a career high.

John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) hit a single to right in the second inning to run his hitting streak to nine games, the most by any Indian this season.

The Indians and Railsplitters will conclude their series on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m.
