Nova Southeastern defeats Newberry, 18-6, to start weekend series

Box Score

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Newberry College baseball team took an early lead but fell victim to a 10-run second inning as the Nova Southeastern University Sharks took the first game of the weekend series, 18-6, on Friday. Newberry falls to 5-11 on the season, while Nova Southeastern is now 8-7.

Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) led the game off with a double, stole third and scored on a throwing error to give Newberry the early 1-0 lead in the first inning.

However, a 10-run bottom of the second from NSU swung momentum in the opposite direction. The inning was keyed by Sharks first-baseman Bryan Cooks two-run homer to the opposite field. The Sharks scored the ten runs on six hits and two Newberry errors. NSU tacked on two more runs on a homer by right-fielder David Robinson. The Sharks would score three more runs in the fifth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach.

Newberry got back on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when a Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) groundout plated Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) from third. Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) scored on a throwing error in the top of the seventh and a two-run single by Manasa gave the Indians three runs in the inning. Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) rounded out Newberry's offense with an RBI groundout in the eighth.

Starter Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.; 1-6) was tagged with the loss. Newberry will try to rebound from the tough day in a Saturday doubleheader against Nova, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The series wraps up Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
