BREVARD, N.C. - Newberry College senior Ashley Marine set a South Atlantic Conference record for most made three-pointers without a miss as she was a perfect 7-of-7 from behind the arc in the Lady Indians' 82-49 win over Brevard College on Wednesday.
Marine's career-high 22 points helped the Lady Indians to their 17th win of the season as they go into their final regular season game with a record of 17-9. Brevard falls to 8-18.
The Lady Indians were led by Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.), who finished the game with a game-high 25 points and 16 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Point guard Janine Ward (Tallevast, Fla.) had 11 points, going 3-of-3 from long distance in the contest. Newberry never trailed in the game and allowed only five made field goals in the opening stanza.
The Indians finished out the half with a jumper by Brennen Long (Sumter, S.C.) to take a 33-20 lead into the halftime intermission.
Newberry shot 58.3 percent in the first 20 minutes of play, while the Tornados shot only 20 percent, connecting on 5-of-25 attempts in the first half.
In the second half, the Lady Indians continued their hot shooting, knocking down 53.6 percent of the shots from the field and outscoring the Tornados 49-29 in the final 20 minutes of play.
The Tornados could not cut into the Newberry lead in the second half, as the Lady Indians added to their lead as they game went on with their biggest lead of 33 points coming at the final buzzer with their 82-49 road win.
Senior Holly Krogman was the only BC player in double-figures, scoring in 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor for the game. Fellow senior Courtney Brandon had eight points, while sophomore Lindsay Thrift added eight points of her own off the BC bench.
Newberry wraps up the regular season on Saturday at home against Lincoln Memorial. The Lady Indians will celebrate Senior Day following the contest as Newberry will recognize the careers of Frasier, Marine, Tosha Goodman and Ashlee Wright. Tipoff for the game is slated for 2 p.m.
