NEWBERRY, S.C. – No. 7 Newberry College defeated Anderson University 42-3 in dual meet action Wednesday afternoon. The Indians won nine of ten matches including seven bonus point wins.
Newberry jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Matt Oliver picked up a 7-0 decision at 125. Oliver dominated the match with two takedowns and a reversal. The freshman accumulated over four minutes of riding time in the match.
A 10-2 major decision win by Andrew Young at 133 lbs. extended the Indians’ lead to 7-0. Young had three takedowns in the match and allowed the two points on escapes. The redshirt junior was in position for a
No. 6 Tony Washington continued to extend the Newberry lead with a win by fall in the 141 lbs. match. Washington was able to reverse a takedown attempt to score two before picking up the fall in 2:04. The win gave the Indians a 13-0 lead.
At 149 lbs., Latra Collick picked up an 8-5 decision to win the Indians fourth straight match. Collick picked up a third period fall and rode out Anderson’s Anthony DiCarlo to secure the win.
After a loss at 157 lbs. made the score 16-3 in favor of the Indians, Alonso Azumendi picked up a 12-4 major decision win. Azumendi was leading 4-3 entering the third period where he picked up eight points including riding time. With the win Newberry increased its lead to 20-3.
Bryant Blanton picked up his 22nd win of the year in the 174 lbs. match with a 15-0 tech fall in 6:43. Blanton took control in the third period with eight points on a reversal and two near falls. The win clinched the dual meet for Newberry as the Indians took a 22 point lead with three matches remaining.
The Newberry lead increased to 30-3 as No. 4 Keeno Griffin won the 184 lbs. match with an 18-2 tech fall in 4:18. Griffin picked up four near falls in the match and had over three minutes of riding time.
At 197 lbs., Kelly Anundson picked up his fifth win by fall of the year as he pinned Logan Watson in 2:31. The win along with a Trojans forfeit at 285 lbs. gave the Indians a 42-3 win.
The win was the Indians' final regular season action before the East Region Tournament next weekend. Newberry, the No. 1 ranked team in the region, will look to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships with a strong showing in the region tournament.
