BELMONT, N.C. – No. 7 Newberry College defeated Belmont Abbey 30-12 in dual meet action Tuesday night. The Indians won eight of nine contested matches in the meet.
No. 8 Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) got things started for the Indians as the meet began at 184 lbs. Griffin controlled the action as he picked up an 8-2 decision over Joe Kent. The win gave Newberry a quick 3-0 lead.
Kelly Anundson (Sparks, Nev.) extended the lead to 7-0 with a 12-0 major decision win over Tim Stanton. The win was Anundson’s ninth major decision of the year, a Newberry record for major decisions in a season.
At 285 lbs., No. 3 Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) won his team best 34th win of the season with a win by fall in 2:11 over Justin Moriarty. Wainwright’s last four wins this season have all been by fall. With the win the Newberry lead was extended to 13-0.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) picked up the biggest win of the night as he defeated returning All-American Chris Neidermeier 3-1. Oliver dominated the match, picking up over four minutes of riding time.
Newberry continued to extend its lead to 19-0 when Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) outscored Reimark Neidermeier 5-0 in the third period to pick up a 6-3 win in the 133 lbs. match.
At 141 lbs., No. 6 Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) picked up an 11-3 major decision over Kevin James, pushing the Indians lead to 23-0.
Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) won the Indians’ seventh straight match of the dual meet with a 5-3 decision over Appolon Jean-Paul. The win clinched the meet for Newberry as the team claimed a 26-0 lead.
A Phil Bliss win at 157 lbs. ended the Indians’ win streak and put the Crusaders on the board as they trailed Newberry 26-6.
At 165 lbs., Alonso Azumendi (Wellford, S.C.) won the final match of the day for Newberry with a 15-4 major decision over Brennan Ochoa. The win gave the Indians their final score of 30 for the meet as they led Belmont Abbey 30-6.
With the win assured, Newberry forfeit the 174 lbs. match making the final score 30-12.
The Indians dominated the third period in the dual meet outscoring Belmont Abbey 28-5 in the final period with all five of the Crusaders’ points coming on escapes.
Newberry returns to the mat on February 20, at 7 p.m. when the team hosts Anderson University in dual meet action. The meet will be the Indians’ final regular season action before the East Region tournament. It will also be Senior Night as Newberry honors the team’s three seniors, Kelly Anundson, Alonso Azumendi and Blane Kelly.
