NEWBERRY, S.C. - The fifth ranked Newberry College wrestling team started off the second annual Newberry Duals with an impressive 36-6 over Division II perennial power, University of Indianapolis Greyhounds. The scarlet and gray won eight of the ten matches with four decisions, two pins, one technical fall and one forfeit.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) scored a 16-1 technical fall over Jimmy Nichols by scoring seven points in the opening period and closing the final stanza with four points to secure five team points.
Sheridan Moran (Lafayette, La.) won his season dual debut as he pinned the Greyhounds' Josh Allen early in the second period at the 3:10 mark. Moran improved his record to a team high 12-2 on the season.
In the 141 pound match, Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) was defeated by Indianapolis' Matt Irwin by a close 7-5 decision. Washington almost came back from an early 4-0 deficit by scoring four points in the final period, but was unable to mount a comeback.
The 149 pounds match featured Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) versus Dave Lopez of Indy. Collick scored a 9-3 decision with four takedowns to give the scarlet and gray a 14-3 lead.
Freshman Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) scored a major decision shutout of Indy's Bryce Givens by a 10-0 count. Byrnes nearly had a pin early in the first period as he scored a takedown and a subsequent three-point near fall.
Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) used a four point second period to propel him to his ninth win of the season as he defeated Jacob Blackwell, 6-2.
Indianapolis recorded their second win of the dual as Kevin Flynn defeated Newberry's Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) in the 174 pound match. Flynn won by an 8-4 decision after he scored four points in the final period to secure the victory.
The 184 pound match was the quickest of the dual as Newberry's Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) pinned Keith Smith in the first period at the 0:55 mark. The pin was Blanton's first of the season as he recorded his fifth win of the season.
All-American Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) extended his winning streak to eight as he scored a 12-5 decision over Indy's Sam Johnson. Griffin scored five takedowns in the match to secure the victory.
Fellow All-American Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) recorded his tenth straight win with a forfeit at the 285 lbs. slot.
Newberry will face off against three more schools today at the second annual Newberry Duals; No. 19 Ashland University at 11 a.m., No. 13 University of Findlay at 4 p.m. and No. 20 Central Missouri at 6 p.m.
