NEWBERRY, S.C. - The seventh ranked Division II team, Newberry College defeated its second Division I opponent of the season with a 28-13 victory over the 22nd ranked North Carolina State University. The scarlet and gray won the final five matches to overcome a 13-4 deficit that the Wolfpack cumulated after the first five matches.
Sophomore Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) lost his first match of the season as he fell to NC State's Taylor Cummings by a 5-3 decision. Cummings' five points were the first points scored on Oliver since November 8th.
The closest match of the dual was at 133 lbs. between Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) and the Wolfpack's Darrius Little. Oliver and Little battled into the third overtime period, where Little scored a takedown for the 5-3 sudden victory.
Newberry won its first match of the dual when Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) defeated Ryan Tice by an 11-1 major decision. Washington, the fifth nationally ranked wrestler at 141 lbs., improved his record to 4-2 on the season.
The Wolfpack increased its lead to 10-4, when the fourth ranked wrestler at D-I, Darrion Caldwell, claimed a 13-1 major decision over Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.). Collick's record fell to 5-2 on the season with his only losses on the season coming to D-I opponents.
The scarlet and gray faced their second straight ranked opponent, when Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) clashed with the 22nd nationally ranked Kody Hamrah. Hamrah claimed NC State's fourth and final victory of the night with a 9-2 decision over Byrnes.
In the 165 pound match, Vin Salek (Toms River, N.J.) extended his winning streak to seven as he defeated the Wolfpack's Quinton Godley with an 11-6 decision. Salek's victory closed the gap between the teams to 13-7 with NC State holding the six point advantage.
Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) tied the match at 13-13, when he pinned Seth Parlier at the 5:30 mark. Kelly's second period fall gave him his ninth victory of the season. The scarlet and gray took their first lead of the match, when Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) won by forfeit as NC State failed to field a wrestler at 184 lbs.
Clinching onto its six point lead, Newberry won the next match to secure the victory over NC State as Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored a 3-2 decision Mark Jahad. Griffin's sixth win of the season gave Newberry its second win over a D-I opponent this year.
In the day's final match, Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) recorded a second period fall over Robert Isola at the 4:25 mark. Wainwright's pin extended his winning streak to nine, which dates back to last season's NCAA Tournament.
Newberry's next dual will be on Dec. 17 against the University of Indianapolis at 9 a.m. Eleazer Arena. The match will be apart of the second annual Newberry Duals, which hosts ten of the best squads from across the country.
