Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team defeated the Carson-Newman Eagles at home Friday night, 3-1 (27-29, 25-23, 25-18, 25-14). Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had the most productive night of her career, setting a new school record of 27 kills in one match. Sales was spectacular, earning an attack percentage of .346 and 12 digs.

Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) put up her second consecutive double-double with a team high 14 digs and 13 kills. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) was also fantastic, setting a season-high 50 assists along with 12 digs. Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) was the fourth player to earn a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

The Eagles' Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) played phenomenally as well, with a team high 14 kills and an attack percentage of .583. Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) played efficiently, earning her team's only double-double with 14 digs and 10 kills. Haley Bush (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the Eagles in digs with 20.

The first set was as close as could be, as neither team could pull ahead by more than two points. It was the longest set of the season for Newberry as both teams hit the ball efficiently. With the set all tied up at 27, the scarlet and gray caught a couple of bad breaks and the Eagles took advantage and took the first set, 27-29. Despite the loss, Sales laid the groundwork for her record setting night in the first with a set high nine kills on 15 attacks.

The Eagles carried their momentum into the second set and found an early 10-7 lead. Newberry would then go on a quick 9-2 run with the help of two service aces from Sales. The scarlet and gray kept their lead for most of the set, but the Eagles battled strong and tied the set at 22-all. After calling a much needed timeout, Newberry stepped on the gas pedal and scored three kills to win the set, 25-23. Lichtie was very efficient on offense in the second set with four kills and an attack percentage of .429.

The match seemed to change in the third set as the scarlet and gray began to break down the solid Eagle defense. With the set tied at 10-all, Newberry went on a 10-1 run that created too much of a lead for Carson-Newman to overcome. Newberry would win the set, 25-18. Harris had her best set of the night in the third with five kills and no errors on 11 attacks.

The scarlet and gray offense was clicking on all cylinders by the final set, giving the Eagles little hope to tie the match up. With Newberry up 15-14, Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) served an impressive 10 consecutive points that clinched the match for NC. During the run, with Newberry leading 20-14, Sales scored the kill that put her name next to the record for most kills in a match at Newberry College. The scarlet and gray won the final set, 25-14. Maia played great in the fourth with set highs in aces (4) and digs (5).

With the win, the Newberry College volleyball team improves its record to 10-5 overall. They also move into a tie for second place in the SAC with a 3-1 conference record. The scarlet and gray will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the take on Lincoln Memorial at 4:30 p.m.
