Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - The Newberry College men's soccer team (5-8-1, 5-1-1 SAC) overtook the South Atlantic Conference lead as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (6-6-1, 2-4-0 SAC).
Senior Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) scored in the 11th minute after his shot was blocked by the Bears' defense, but Abbott collected the deflection and shot a second time and found the back of the net.
Newberry extended its first half lead, when Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) scored in the 13th minute off an assist from freshman Jason Large (Aiken, S.C.). Ogunseye headed Large's cross from the right flank past Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Matthew DiCerbo (Boca Raton, Fla.) giving Newberry the 2-0 lead.
The Newberry defense held the Bears scoreless for the rest of the first half and took a 2-0 lead into the second half.
Lenoir-Rhynes would get on the scoreboard in the 61st minute as Aaron Wheeler (Baltimore, Md.) dribbled down the left flank and into the Newberry penalty area, where he beat Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) to decrease Newberry's lead to 2-1.
The scarlet and gray defense ensured the victory as they kept the Bears offense scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Dieterich recorded four saves in the game as he improved his record to 4-6.
Newberry plays Pfeiffer University on the road in their next game on October 22nd at 3 p.m. The scarlet and gray's final game of the season will be at Carson Newman on November 1st at 8 p.m.
