Box Score TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Newberry volleyball team earned another road victory Saturday afternoon by defeating the North Greenville Crusaders, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21).
Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was on top of her game with match highs in kills (14) and digs (10). Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was also fantastic with 10 kills, six digs, and four aces.
Niki Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.) had one of her best matches of the season Saturday with five kills and four aces. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) led her team in assists with 19.
Newberry came out early and showed they deserve to be ranked eighth in the Southeast region poll. With the score tied at seven all, Newberry went on a 13-2 run aided by three service aces from Maia. The Crusaders battled hard and brought the deficit down to five points, but a kill from Maia sealed the set, 25-19. She finished the opening set with four aces, three kills, and three digs.
The scarlet and gray carried their momentum into the second set and opened up a 6-1 lead. The Newberry offense kept the Crusaders at bay from then on out, scoring five runs of three straight points or more. They won the middle set by the score of 25-16. Sales had her best set of the day in the second, earning a team high five digs and five kills with a .444 attack percentage.
The third set was the most competitive of the day as Newberry found it difficult to gain a large advantage. The Crusaders played well and built 18-14 lead until Newberry went on 9-2 run that all but locked up the match. The scarlet and gray won the match-clinching set, 25-21. Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) stepped in as the starting setter in the final set and earned 12 assists and four digs. She finished the day with 17 assists and six digs.
With the win, the Newberry College volleyball team climbs to 14-7 overall. They will return to action this Friday, October 24 at home against Tusculum at 7 p.m. The scarlet and gray will finish the weekend with a Saturday evening home match against Mars Hill at 5 p.m.
