Box Score BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team returned to their winning ways Wednesday night as they defeated the Brevard Tornados, 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-13).
Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was on top of her game with match highs in kills (17) and digs (10). She also earned two aces and an attack percentage of .556. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) also played fantastic and tallied up a match high 32 assists to go along with seven digs and three kills.
The opening set was the most competitive of the night as both teams worked their way towards a nine all tie. Newberry then went on a quick 6-2 run thanks to kills from Sales, Blakely, and Niki Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.). The Newberry defense went on to keep the Tornados at bay by preventing them from coming within 2 points of tying the set. NC would win the opening set, 25-21. Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) had a strong first set with three kills on six attacks. She would finish the night with six kills and four digs.
From then on out it was Newberry's volleyball match. The second set was dominated by the scarlet and gray who would go on four different runs of four points or more. With two points to go in the set, Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) earned consecutive service aces to clinch the middle set, 25-12. Sales had a great second set with six kills and no errors on nine attacks.
The final set was similar to the second as Newberry dominated with a total attack percentage of .324. The Newberry offense played amazing as the scarlet and gray went on nine runs of three straight points or more. Newberry went on to win the match clinching set, 25-13. Dani Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.) entered the match in the third set and played efficiently. She scored three kills and no errors on seven attacks earning an attack percentage of .429.
With the win, the Newbery College volleyball team improves their record to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Next, the scarlet and gray will stay on the road to play North Greenville this Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m. They will return home on October 24 to take on Tusculum at 7 p.m.
