Newberry men's soccer falls to Lander, 5-2

GREENWOOD - The Newberry College men's soccer team (2-7-0, 2-1-0 SAC) fell toLanderUniversity(7-1-1), 5-2, as five different players scored for the Bearcats.

Lander's Martyn Bell (Cleveland,England) led off the scoring for the Bearcats with a long goal from the right side in the 5th minute on an assist from Jamie Davison (Middlesbrough,England).

In the 18th minute, Aaron Brittain (Cleveland,England) made it 2-0 for Lander, when he chipped the ball over the head of goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa,Fla.).

The Bearcats continued to score as Adam Arthur (York, England) scored from directly in front of the goal in the 28th minute on an assist from Brittain.

The scarlet and gray cut the margin to 3-1 in the 42nd minute as senior forward Debola Ogunseye scored his sixth goal of the season.

The second half wasn't very different from the first as Lander increased their lead to 4-1 as David Winskill (Durham, England) found the back of the net on a 30-yard shot from the right sideline in the 74th minute.

Not to be deterred, Ogunseye would continue his offensive onslaught as he scored his second goal of the game in the 88th minute. His shot was fired from 25 yards out that flew past the Bearcat goalkeeper.

The final goal was scored in the 89th minute, when Davison scored on an assist from Ivan Stoykov (Sofia,Bulgaria) directly in front of the goal.

Newberry will return home for Homecoming weekend as it faces off againstTusculumon Saturday in a 4 p.m. match.
