HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry Lady Indians rolled past the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University 64-51. With the win, the Lady Indians improve to 12-4 and 3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lincoln Memorial falls to 7-7 and remains winless in the SAC at 0-4.
Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) set a school record for most made field goals without a miss by shooting a perfect 8 for 8 from the floor. Wright also tied the SAC mark for best shooting percentage in a single game while hitting 100 percent. The Lady Indian becomes the third player to shot 100 percent but she is the first to accomplish this in a conference game.
Newberry showed off the conference's best defense while holding their opponent to under 55 points for the eighth time this season. The Lady Indians held Lincoln Memorial to 30 percent shooting in the game.
After Lincoln Memorial started the game on a 5-0 run, Newberry scored the next 11 points to take control of the game. The visitors would never trail again. Led by Ashlee Wright's 10 first half points, the Lady Indians opened up a 14 point lead (29-15) with 3:43 to play in the first half.
However, the Railsplitters closed the half on a 10-0 run to cut the Newberry lead to four points. Newberry took a 29-25 lead into the halftime period.
The Lady Indians began the second half with a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 41-25. The Lady Indians' defense held Lincoln Memorial to only two field goals for the first seven minutes of the second half while opening a 21 point lead at 51-30. Newberry shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half to cruise to a 64-51 win.
Newberry had 11 different players score while Wright led the game with 17 points. Wright's 17 points is a season high. Wright was the only Lady Indians to reach double digits; however, Tacarra Harris (Tupelo, Miss.), Hanna Porter (Brandon, Miss.), and Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) each had nine points in the game. Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Railsplitters were led by Shawna Nicols with 13 points. Andi Winney recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Davis also had 10 points in the game.
Newberry will have the weekend off before hosting the first place Tusculum College Pioneers next Wednesday. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
