Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team swept Benedict College, 30-15, 30-15 and 30-9, to move to 5-0 on the young season Friday night. Priscila Sales led the Lady Indians with 10 kills.
Newberry (5-0) allowed no service aces and had no attacks blocked in the romp, with most of the bench personnel able to play throughout the match. Benedict (1-1) was only able to hit for a .067 percentage in the match.
The Lady Indians jumped out early leads in all of the games, and closed out the opening game with seven consecutive points. Seniors Laurie Barman (Madison, Wisc.) and Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) each had solo blocks in the opening two games.
The third game was all Lady Indians, as the home squad closed out with nine consecutive points with the final point coming on an emphatic kill from Dani Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.).
Sophomore Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) each had seven kills in the winning effort. Freshman Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) led the team with 19 assists, while senior Christy Stegall (Fort Mill, S.C.) led the team with 11 digs. Blakely, Maia and Sales each had two service aces.
The Lady Indians travel to Tigerville to face off against North Greenville University before opening South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, as they host Catawba College.
