Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Indians fell in five games to the Carson-Newman College Lady Eagles, 30-21, 22-30, 23-30, 30-22, 15-8, in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Saturday. The loss drops Newbery to 9-2 overall and 2-2 in SAC play, while Carson-Newman is 14-2 overall and 1-2 in the SAC.
Newberry's Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led all players with 21 kills, her second 20-kill performance this week. She recorded a double-double by adding 16 digs. Carson-Newman's Carly Mozgai was the only Lady Eagle in double-digit kills with 18.
The Lady Eagles' defense set the tone for their win, as they totaled 14 blocks and 95 digs. Setter Stephanie Cutter had a double-double with 37 assists and 23 digs. Nikki James had one solo block and seven block assists. C-N's Haley led all players with 27 digs.
Despite Carson-Newman's defensive efforts, the Lady Indians managed to take a 2-1 lead with solid performances from Sales and Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), who finished the match with 10 kills.
But Carson-Newman pulled away late in the fourth game, and took an early lead in the fifth and never looked back.
Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) each had 14 digs for Newberry.
The Lady Indians step out of conference play for a home match against Southern Wesleyan University on Wednesday before returning to SAC play with a two-match swing through Tennessee. Carson-Newman plays at Brevard on Tuesday.
