Ruppe and Sales set school records in Newberry's 3-2 win over Brevard

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. - Priscila Sales set a Newberry College record for kills in a match with 24 kills, while Kilee Ruppe set the school record for most assists in a match with 66 assists in the Lady Indians' 3-2 comeback victory over Brevard College in Division II volleyball action Wednesday night. Newberry moves to 8-1 on the season with the win.

Sales was one of five Newberry players with double-digit kills, leading the way with 24 kills. She breaks the previous record of 23 kills which was set by teammate Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) twice last year.

Ruppe (Spartanburg, S.C.) did a good job running the offense as she distributed an all-time Newberry high 66 assists. The previous record of 63 assists had been held by Alicia Khoury since 2004.

After cruising through the opening game the Lady Indians dropped the second and third games. The Tornados (10-3) took the second game when Newberry dropped six straight points after leading 29-25.

But the Lady Indians hit the comeback trail in the fourth and put the match away in the fifth by claiming nine straight points early in the frame to keep Brevard at bay down the stretch.

Senior Laurie Barman (Madison, Wisc.) had 16 kills, while fellow senior Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) put away 14 kills. Maia and freshman Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) each had 11 kills.

Harris added 19 digs to lead the Lady Indians for her fourth straight match with double-digit digs and her second career double-double. Sales also added 12 digs for her third double-double as a Lady Indian. Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also contributed with 15 digs. Maia and Sales tied for the team lead in service aces with four apiece.

Barman was a defensive force in the middle with six solo blocks and one block assist.

The Lady Indians return home and back into South Atlantic Conference play on Friday night, as they welcome the Lions of Mars Hill College to Eleazer Arena for a 7 p.m. tilt. Newberry plays Carson-Newman College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
