Box Score BELMONT, N.C. - Newberry College fell to Belmont Abbey, 2-1, in NCAA Division II men's soccer action Tuesday afternoon. Seth Addison scored for the Indians in the losing effort.
After a ten day layoff Newberry came out strong getting on the board in just the 13th minute of the game. Junior Seth Addison (Accra, Ghana) scored on a header off of a free kick. The goal was the seventh of the season for Addison.
Belmont Abbey tied the game late in the first half when Andrei Petrov shot the ball from the left side of the box and beat Newberry goalie Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) on the one timer.
In the second half the Crusaders took the lead in the 58th minute when Luis Arrieta bent a free kick into the top left corner of the net from 25 yards out to give Belmont Abbey a 2-1 advantage.
The Indians tried to retie the game but were unable to get the equalizing goal. Belmont Abbey goalie Bryan Alenky recorded eight saves including consecutive Newberry shots by Marvin Torvic and Seth Addison within a minute of each other late in the second half.
Dietrich played a strong game for the Indians recording six saves in the contest. Belmont Abbey outshot Newberry 16-12 with Addison leading the way for the Indians recording six shots.
Newberry falls to 4-3 on the year including 0-1-0 in South Atlantic Conference action. The Indians' next game is Friday, September 21, when they face the Spartans from USC Upstate. The contest is a rematch of a game from last year which Upstate won 3-2.
