Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry College women's volleyball team defeated host institution Augusta State, 30-23, 27-30, 30-26, 30-21, to finish off a 4-0 weekend at the Jaguar Classic on Saturday evening. The result marks the Lady Indians' first 4-0 start since 1990 and matches the team's entire 2006 win total.
Newberry had three players record double-doubles, led by Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also had 15 kills and 18 digs. Fernanda Frey (Sao Paulo, Brazil) pounded out 15 kills to go with 11 digs, while Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) had 11 kills and 10 digs.
Senior Laurie Barman (Madison, Wisc.) had a strong game in the middle, leading the Lady Indians with six solo blocks and three assists to go with 10 kills. Defensively, Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) tied Sales for the team lead in digs with 18.
The Lady Indians hit for a .284 hitting percentage while limiting the Jaguars (2-2) to .118 hitting. Kilee Ruppe (Spartanburg, S.C.) dished out 52 assists in the winning effort for Newberry.
The first two games were relatively shaky for Newberry, which had been hitting at an astounding clip in the prior three matches. The second game saw the Lady Indians held to .154 hitting, yet they still lost by only three points.
But Newberry cleaned up the sloppiness of the first two games by hitting over .300 in the closing two games to wrap up the win.
The Lady Indians now take a break before going into full gear this season. The team's next match comes on September 5 in the home opener against USC Aiken.
