Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. � The second-seed Carson-Newman College Eagles would capitalize on four Newberry College errors in the first inning to score nine runs, en route to a 11-1 victory over the fifth-seeded Indians on Friday morning at Municipal Stadium in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The game was suspended on Thursday evening due to heavy rains in the area.
In the Carson-Newman (31-17) first, the Eagles put eight runs on the scoreboard before Newberry (19-28) recorded a single out. Eagle first baseman Nick Achberger drove in two runs in two at-bats in the frame with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly.
Jason Gray and Mills Rogers each collected three hits on the day for the Eagles. Jonathan McMahon also went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
Clark Mullins led the Indians at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, including a run scored.
Carson-Newman pitcher Wes McIntyre (1-0) came on in relief of starter Matt Teague, who started on Thursday. McIntyre pitched six innings, allowing no runs during the game.
Newberry starter Brandon Petty (6-3) took the loss, allowing only two earned runs while recording only one out in the contest.
Newberry will face Wingate in an elimination game this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Carson-Newman advanced in the winner�s bracket and will face winner of the Catawba/Lenior-Rhyne game, which will be played today at 1:00 p.m.
