Indians lose 14-5 to Francis Marion

GREENVILLE, S.C. � The Newberry College baseball team fell to 26th ranked Francis Marion University, 14-5, in non-conference action Tuesday night at Greenville Municipal Stadium in Greenville, S.C.

Patriot hitters jumped on Newberry in the first inning with a couple runs but pulled away early with seven runs in the second. Indian starter Dale Bennett was touched up for nine runs on nine hits and did not register an out in the second inning.

Francis Marion pitched five players with junior Dylan Owen picking up his eighth win of the year with a scoreless fifth.

Though Bennett was tagged with the loss, the Indians received an encouraging effort from senior Will Folk. The Charleston, S.C. native pitched five innings allowing four hits and two earned runs.

Senior first baseman Clark Mullins was 3-for-4 on the evening with a run scored and two driven in. Fellow senior Ryan Easterby was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and freshman Scott Horvath was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

The Indians next play this Thursday in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament. All tournament games will be held at Greenville Municipal Stadium. Newberry will match up with Carson-Newman with first pitch coming at 3:45 p.m.
