Lady Indians close out regular season with 8-1 win over Catawba

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team wrapped up its most successful regular season since joining the NCAA with an 8-1 win over visiting Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference action Thursday.

Newberry, ranked ninth in the Southeast Region, closes the regular season at 9-6 overall and 6-1 in the SAC. Catawba is 13-11 overall and 3-4 in the league.

Newberry's top doubles flight of Autise Mortimer and Lauren Hartley finished the season 7-0 in SAC play with an 8-1 win over Lauren Fluegge and KT Rebadow.

Also, Bethany Poppe wrapped up a 7-0 SAC season with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win over Nikiah Knox in No. 6 singles.

The Lady Indians will host the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament for the first time in program history Tuesday. Newberry, the second seed, will play seventh-seeded Wingate. The Lady Indians swept Wingate, 9-0, in their earlier meeting this year.
