Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. � Nick Achberger led off the 10th inning with a solo homerun to beak a 4-4 tie as Carson-Newman defeated Newberry College 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.
Carson-Newman moves to 14-6 overall and 7-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Indians fall to 7-13 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Newberry would break a scoreless tie in the third inning, scoring two runs on two hits. Anthony Dillenger led off the frame with a double to left. Adam Spadafora would reach base on an error by Eagle pitcher Justin Higdon to put runners at the corners with nobody out. The Indians would then execute a double steal as Dillenger swiped home to score the first run of the game. Kris Garcia wrapped a single to left to plate Spadafora, giving the Indians a two-run lead.
The Eagles would tie the game at 2-2 in their half of the seventh. Catcher Jim Doran would single to right-center to score Jason Gray while Adam Kefauver drove in a run with a two-out single.
In the home half of the eighth, Carson-Newman would score two more runs to take a 4-2 lead. Cory McGinnis and Brandon Burchfield had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Acheberger drove McGinnis home with a single to right. Gray would give Carson-Newman a two-run lead with a RBI single up the middle.
The Indians would fight back however, plating two runs in the ninth to tie the game at 4-4. Chase Bailey led off with a double to left. Dillenger would then get hit-by-a-pitch and pinch-hitter would draw a walk to load the bases with only one out. Pinch-runner Casey Faulkenberry would score on an error by Eagle shortstop Langdon Potts to draw to within one run. Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to right which would score Dillenger from third to even the score.
In the Carson-Newman 10th, Achbeger would deliver the game-winning hit as he connected on a homerun to left to give the Eagles the victory.
For Newberry offensively, Bailey led at the plate, going 3-for-4. Achberger finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in to lead Carson-Newman.
Mark Carroll picked up the victory in relief while Indian reliever Travis Howard (0-1) received the loss.
Newberry will travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to face Barry University on Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
