Women's Tennis claims program-best fourth SAC win, 6-3, over Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry College women's tennis team broke the school's record for most victories in the South Atlantic Conference with a 6-3 victory over Tusculum College at the Nichols Tennis Center on Saturday.

Newberry is now on a five-match winning streak, with a record of 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the league. The program's previous high in conference wins came in 1998, the College's first season in the SAC, when the Lady Indians went 3-4.

Tusculum, ranked No. 9 in the region, drops to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the SAC.

Newberry posted victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, including an 8-1 decision by Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario, Canada) at the top flight. The win is seventh consecutive for the duo at No. 1 doubles.

The Tusculum duo of Danae Valderrama and Samantha Cantu cut the deficit to 2-1 with their 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Valderrama captured another point for the Pioneers at No. 1 singles with her 6-1, 7-5 win over Mortimer.

But Hartley and Isabel Kreidler (Horb, Germany) answered with two critical points at the second and third flight.  Hartley defeated Tusculum's Jennifer Sparks 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, while Kreidler posted a 6-0, 6-3 win against Cantu at the third flight.

Tanea Miller sealed the win with her victory at No. 4 singles, while Bethany Poppe answered with a three-set win at No. 6 over Caroline Crowe. Poppe has now recorded seven straight wins in singles competition.

The Lady Indians host two matches next week, with a non-conference match against Florida Tech at 2 p.m. Thursday. A crucial conference match against Mars Hill comes on Friday at 2 p.m. in Newberry.
