JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College women's tennis team had its string of sweeps broken Friday, but the Lady Indians' winning ways continued, as they notched a 7-2 victory over Carson-Newman College in South Atlantic Conference action.
Newberry (6-5 overall, 3-1 SAC) was once again paced by the play of Autise Mortimer.
The Bahamian notched her fourth straight win at No. 1 singles over Tessa Caprio, 6-3, 6-4. Mortimer and Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario, Canada) won their sixth No. 1 doubles match in succession, 8-6, over Caprio and Elizabeth Sneed.
Bethany Poppe (Califton, N.J.) capped off a day in which she was named the College's Student of the Month with her sixth straight victory in the No. 6 singles slot, defeating Kellie Rimmer, 6-0, 1-0, with Rimmer retiring in the second set.
Isabel Kreidler (Horb, Germany) helped the Newberry cause with a come-from-behind victory in No. 3 singles. She fell behind early to Sneed but won, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Lady Indians will push for another crucial conference victory Saturday at 11 a.m., as they take on Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.
