Box Score KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Newberry baseball fell for the second time on February 3, losing 12-1 to Wingate University and dropping to 0-2 to start the season. The Indians struggled offensively, putting together just five hits and one run.
Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Indian starter Matthew Awtrey struck out the first batter of the game, but then surrendered a hit and a walk sandwiched around three stolen bases and Wingate chalked up the first run of the game on a fielder's choice from fourth place hitter Michael Taylor. Then first baseman Blair Troutman doubled in a run.
Awtrey escaped the first when Bulldog left fielder Grayson Tanner singled in the third run, but was caught trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Wingate posted another trio of runs in the top of the second inning, but then Awtrey settled down for three scoreless innings.
Newberry pushed across it's only run of the ball game in the bottom of the fifth when senior left fielder Nick Martin led off with a two-bagger and advanced to third on a throwing error. After first baseman Matt Webb popped out, sophomore Adam Spadafora drove in Martin with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Indians will be in action tomorrow vs. Catawba College at 4 p.m., continuing the third and final game of the pre-season South Atlantic Conference tournament in Kannapolis, N.C.
