Lady Indians lose to Wingate 72-59

WINGATE, N.C. - Newberry College women's basketball lost in conference action to SAC leader Wingate University, 72-59, on Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena. Wingate's Tanetra Barrett led all scorers with 21 points.

Wingate (20-5 overall, 12-2 SAC) wins 20 games for the 20th season. Newberry (19-6 overall, 8-6 SAC) was led by junior guard Ashlee Wright and her 19 points. The Myrtle Beach native hit 7-of-14 shots from the floor in 38 minutes of play. Wright also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists.

Senior forward Tygress Hope also got into the scoring act with a season-best 11 points and career-high 13 rebounds and 34 minutes played. Junior Tonque Frasier had 13 points and eight rebounds in 33 minutes.

Newberry jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first 4:36 of the game, but Wingate took the lead at 13:14 and never looked back.

The Lady Indians host rival Presbyterian College this coming Wednesday, February 21, in Eleazer Arena with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
