NEWBERRY - The Newberry Lady Indians rolled past Allen University 83-47. With the win, the Lady Indians improve to 6-2 on the season.
Trailing 6-5 early in the game, Newberry went on a 19-4 run to set the tone for the remainder of the game. The 6-5 lead for the visiting Yellow Jackets was their third and final lead of the game. After their run, Newberry maintained a double digit lead for the rest of game including leading by at least 20 points for the entire second half.
Behind the strength of Tonique Frasier�s (Walterboro, S.C.) 14 point performance in the first half, Newberry took a 20 point lead into the locker room. As a team, the Lady Indians shot 66.7% from the floor for the half. Frasier also led the Lady Indians� defensive efforts with three steals and two blocks in the opening half. Newberry forced 13 turnovers in the period.
The second half saw much of the same from Lady Indians who forced 11 more turnovers converting those takeaways into 17 points. Newberry shot 58.2% from the field in the game.
Four Newberry players scored at least 10 points on the afternoon. Sade Coates (Meridian, Miss.) had 10 points and eight boards. Laura Marquardt (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Tacarra Harris (Tupelo, Miss.) each added 11 points. The Mississippi native went 9 for 11 from the charity stripe. Harris also had seven rebounds. Frasier, for the fourth time in five games, led the team with 23 points. She was one rebound short of having a double-double.
Allen University�s Ashley McCoy led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 16 points. Shuandrika McCorkle added 10 points.
The Lady Indians will host Benedict College next Friday. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Eleazer Arena.
