NEWBERRY, S.C. – No. 9 Newberry College won eight of ten matches to defeat Carson-Newman College 37-9 in the first dual meet of the Newberry Duals Saturday morning. Six Indians recorded bonus point wins in the victory.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) began the match for Newberry with an 11-2 major decision victory over Brandon Castle. After falling behind 2-0 on an early takedown, Oliver scored the final 11 points to secure the major decision.
Kent Pierson pulled the Eagles to within one at 4-3 with a 7-0 win at 133 lbs.
At 141 lbs. Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.) was holding a five count near-fall when a defensive fall was called giving Carson-Newman the win.
Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) won is dominant fashion at 149 lbs. scoring an 11-0 major decision victory.
Christian Johnson (Summerville, S.C.) followed that up with a pinfall victory over Alex Cate at 3:39. The win helped to regain the lead for the Indians with a score of 14-9.
After a forfeit at 165 lbs. extended the Newberry lead to 20-9, Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) recorded a pin at 1:55.
The Indians won their final three matches as Jake Elkins (Trussvile, Ala.) won a tight 5-4 decision and Kelly Anundson (Sparks, Nev.) and Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) both recorded major decision victories.
In other dual meets No. 2 Minnesota State University-Mankato defeated King 44-3, No. 10 Ashland University defeated Belmont Abbey College 26-6, and No. 11 Chadron State College defeated Anderson University 27-12
