Lady Indians wrap up regular season with sweep of Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team put the wraps on a successful regular season with a 30-10, 30-18, 30-21 sweep of Benedict College on Thursday night. The Lady Indians finish the regular season with an 18-8 record, which is the most wins by a Newberry squad since the institution joined NCAA Division II in 1992.

Freshman Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) led the Lady Indians with a career-high 19 kills. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) had her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 10 digs, as well as seven service aces. Niki Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.) also added a career-high nine kills.

Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the team with 24 digs. Kilee Ruppe (Spartanburg, S.C.) dished out 37 assists in two games, while Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) had 14 assists.

The Lady Indians breezed through the opening game, as they committed no hitting errors and led by as many as 22 points en route to the 30-10 win.

The second game started off tighter, but Newberry pulled away on a run of six consecutive service aces by Sales. The third game was tight throughout, but a solo block by Jennamarie Lesky (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) gave Newberry the match win.

Newberry will take a week off before participating in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament at Jefferson City, Tenn., on the campus of Carson-Newman College. Pairings for the November 9-10 tournament will be released early next week.
