Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. � Newberry fell to Wingate 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-18) this evening in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. The Lady Indians fall to 17-8 (7-7 SAC). Wingate improves to 28-1 (12-0 SAC).
Wingate came out strong scoring the first four points of the game. Newbery would get a couple back but the Bulldogs stretch the lead to 11-3. The Lady Indians eventually settled in and cut the lead to three at 21-18. However, Wingate again pulled away and took game one 30-22.
Game two started much the same with the Bulldogs scoring the first five points. However, Newberry showed good resilience battling to get within one point on five different occasions, the last time trailing 16-15. With the Lady Indians back within two points again at 26-24, the Bulldogs scored the next four points to close out game two 30-24.
Trailing 2-1 in the third game, Wingate went on a 7 point run to make it a five point lead. The Bulldogs then scored 11 of the next 16 points to put the game out of reach for the Lady Indians at 18-6. Newberry went on a 7-2 run but the Bulldogs lead proved to be too large. Wingate took the game and match with a 30-18 victory.
Newberry was led by Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with 16 kills. Defensively, senior Christy Stegall (Fort Mill, S.C.) led the way with 12 digs. Stegall and fellow seniors Laurie Barman (Madison, Wisc.) and Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) play their final home match for the Lady Indians. Barman finished with five kills on the night while Coleman recorded six kills and added one ace.
Wingate was led offensively by Heather Myklebust with 11 kills and Rebecca Bloemer added 10 kills. Chelsea Cancelliere led the way defensively with 14 digs.
Newberry returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on Benedict College at 7 p.m.
