Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College senior Cara Coleman recorded her 1,000th career kill on Saturday, as the Lady Indians defeated Lincoln Memorial University, 3-1 (17-30, 30-25, 30-15, 30-18), in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday.
Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) finished the match with 10 kills, a solo block and a block assist. Her career kills total now stands at 1,009
Newberry (17-7 overall, 7-6 SAC) started off slowly, as the Lady Railsplutter defense took control. But the Lady Indians responded with a powerful offensive attack to win the final three games. The match win is Newberry's fourth consecutive in conference play.
The Lady Indians were led by Fernanda Frey (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 17 digs. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) contributed 14 kills to the winning effort.
Laurie Barman (Madison, Wis.) had a good game up front with 8 kills, two solo blocks and five block assists. Freshman setter Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) dished out 41 assists as well as earning 11 digs.
Defensively, Newberry held LMU to a .045 hitting percentage. Frey and Christy Stegall (Fort Mill, S.C.) led the team with 17 digs each.
Lincoln Memorial (19-12, 5-6 SAC) was led by double-doubles from Amanda Horenkamp (13 kills, 17 digs) and Amanda Baker (11 kills, 25 digs).
The Lady Indians wrap up South Atlantic Conference play Tuesday, as they host the Wingate University Bulldogs. The match in Eleazer Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. LMU hosts Tusculum on Halloween.
