Newberry defeats No. 15 Carson-Newman in OT

Box Score

NEWBERRY – Inga Woiwode broke the Newberry career goals record as the Newberry College Lady Indians defeated No. 15 Carson-Newman College in overtime, 2-1, in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon. The win was the first ever for the Lady Indians over a ranked opponent and secured just their second winning season in team history.

Woiwode scored both goals for Newberry, which could win the South Atlantic Conference with a Lincoln Memorial loss or tie tomorrow against Wingate.

In a game strewn with postseason implications both Newberry and Carson-Newman came out firing in the first half.

The Eagles struck first, getting on the board in the seventh minute when Claire Ramsdale connected on a header off a corner from Brittany Moore.

The score remained 1-0 until the 38th minute when Woiwode connected from the left side of the box. The senior received the pass from Brooke Tumblin in open space and beat Carson-Newman keeper Nyssa Griffin with a shot across the goal to the right side. Amberly Fowler also earned an assist for the initial pass to Tumblin.

The Lady Indians had several chances to increase their lead but were unable to connect. Adriana Farfan had one shot hit the crossbar and another blocked by an Eagles defender when she had an open goal. Woiwode had a shot hit the post and Mandi Butler hit the crossbar with an apparent game-winning shot in the 81st minute.

The game would head to extra time as a superb defensive second half by both squads left the score tied at 1 at the end of regulation.

In the 98th minute Inga Woiwode connected again for her second goal of the game with a fantastic shot into the lower left corner of the goal for the win. Woiwode flicked Tumblin’s cross behind her leg to beat Griffin. Adriana Farfan recorded an assist on the play.

The Lady Indians’ 4-2-1 record in conference play is the best finish in the history of the program. The team’s 13 points will earn Newberry the No. 1 or 2 seed heading into the South Atlantic Conference tournament, depending on the result of the Lincoln Memorial-Wingate game tomorrow afternoon.

Inga Woiwode’s two goals moved her past Michelle Baker for first all-time in career goals with 36. The senior forward’s 105 career points makes her the first Lady Indians player ever to eclipse the 100 point mark.

The overtime game was the ninth of the season for the Lady Indians which ties the Division II record for overtime games in a season. Two other teams have played nine overtime games, Northwest Mo. St. in 2005 and South Dakota St. in 2003.

On Senior Day, the Lady Indians' Class of 2008 became the first class to graduate with a winning record in the SAC over their four years. Newberry has compiled a 13-12-3 record in the 2004-2007 seasons. The class is also the first in team history to graduate with an overall winning record at 36-25-10.

With their top four finish in the SAC, the Lady Indians will host a first round game on Wednesday, October 31, in the upcoming Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament.
