Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. � Newberry College, led by a high powered offense, rolled past the Crusaders of North Greenville 30-18, 30-9, 30-11. With the win, the Lady Indians remain undefeated in non-conference play and move to 11-5 on the season. The Crusaders fall to 2-23.
Newberry started game one with an 8-1 run. Newberry stretched the lead to 13-2. The Crusaders would find some rhythm, but the Lady Indians� offense would prove to be too much. Newberry recorded 19 kills and hit .567 as a team in game one en route to a 30-18 win.
Game two would be much of the same as Newberry had 13 kills with only one attack error. The Lady Indians went on an 18-1 run which included 11 straight points to take game two.
The attacking efforts continued in game three as the Lady Indians hit an astounding .630 recording 19 kills and only one attacking error.
Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) hit .706 for the match with 12 kills on 17 attempts. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) hit .619 with 13 kills on 21 attempts. Neither player had an attacking error in the match. Maia�s hitting percentage ranks 2nd highest in school history for a match while Sales� percentage is now 6th highest for a single match. Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) recorded 11 kills and hit .476 on the evening. Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) edged closer to eclipsing the career kills mark in Newberry history adding seven kills to her career total. Coleman is now just nine kills shy of breaking Bronwyn Libeer�s record of 962 career kills.
As a team, the Lady Indians hit .529 with 51 kills on 87 attempts and made only five attacking errors. The team�s hitting percentage is the 5th highest for a match in South Atlantic Conference history.
Defensively, Newberry was lead by Harris with 12 digs. Harris and Maia each had four aces on the night.
The Lady Indians travel to the Tar Heel state for a SAC doubleheader this weekend. Newberry will face Catawba on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and will take on Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday at 11 a.m. In their first meetings, Catawba defeat Newberry 3-1 while Newberry swept Lenoir-Rhyne.
