CLINTON - The Newberry College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five with a 76-64 win over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Newberry (17-2, 6-2 SAC) was led by junior guard Monica Alexander (Norcross, Ga.), who scored 22 points to lead all scorers in the game.
Presbyterian (5-13, 0-8 SAC) dropped its eighth straight conference game despite a 19-point performance from Jessica Parris, and the team shooting 54.8% (23-of-42) from the floor.
The Lady Blue Hose kept the game close for the majority of the first half, but the Lady Indians went on a 17-7 run over the final 5:22 of the half to lead 40-28 going into the locker room.
PC narrowed the Newberry lead to six points with 13:58 to play on a layup by Sharie Hopkins. However, Newberry responded with a 16-8 surge over the next six minutes to help sel the result.
Senior forward Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) scored 15 for the Lady Indians, shooting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe and Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.) was good for 14 points, going 4-of-8 from behind the arc.
Newberry's next action comes on Wednesday night, as the Lady Indians travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to play the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
