No. 16 Newberry defeats Belmont Abbey, 38-9, in wrestling action

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The 16th-ranked Newberry College wrestlers defeated Belmont Abbey College, 38-9, in a crucial Southeast Region wrestling match here Thursday night.

All but two Indian grapplers won their matches, with three winning by fall. 184-pounder Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.), 197-pounder Kelly Anundson (Sparks, Nev.) and heavyweight Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) all pinned their opponents in succession to help secure the win for the Indians.

Newberry's next match is on the road, as the Indians travel to Spartanburg Methodist College on January 30. First match is slated for 7 p.m.

174 pounds – No. 6 Quinn Tolbert (NEW) won by decision over Dave Hoggard (BAC), 5-2, NEW 11-3

184 pounds – Keeno Griffin (NEW) won by fall (1:53) over Will Cruz (BAC), NEW 17-3

197 pounds – Kelly Anundson (NEW) won by fall (3:39) Kyle Spar (BAC), NEW 23-3

285 pounds – Cy Wainwright (NEW) wonby fall (5:36) over AJ Scales (BAC), NEW 29-3

125 pounds – Chris Neidermeier (BAC) won by fall (0:43) Chauncey McElheney (NEW), NEW 29-9

133 pounds – NEW wins by forfeit, NEW 35-9

141 pounds – Dwayne Tolleson (NEW) won by decision over Appolon Jean-Paul (BAC), 4-2, NEW wins 38-9
