NEWBERRY, S.C. - Ashlee Wright's jumper with 2:23 remaining in the game put the Lady Indians up for good as Newberry went on to the 63-57 victory over Catawba on Wednesday evening in Eleazer Arena.
Wright finished the game with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She was also three-of-five from the free throw line and contributed four steals as Newberry (16-2, 5-2 SAC) won their fourth straight game.
The first half was a see-saw battle between the two schools, as the fans saw five ties and seven lead changes. Catawba (14-5, 4-3 SAC) took a one-point lead at 24-23 when Sicilia LoSauro hit a free throw with 2:05 remaining in the first stanza. The Lady Indians took the lead with 15 seconds left in the first half when Tonique Frasier scored on a layup off an assist by Monica Alexander to give Newberry a one-point lead at 25-24 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Newberry capitalized on 11 Catawba turnovers in the first 12 minutes of play to jump out to their biggest lead of the night at 50-37 when Frasier nailed a jumper in the paint at the 8:13 mark.
Catawba would promptly go on a 17-6 run over the next 4:45 to take the lead at 57-56. Catawba benefited on the scoring stretch on two three-pointers by LoSauro. Wright would then break the tie when she nailed a 12-foot jumper to give the Indians a one-point lead.
Newberry shot 41 percent from the field while Catawba shot 51 percent. The Lady Indians capitalized on Catawba's 29 turnovers to score 30 points off those miscues.
Frasier matched Wright with 17 points on eight-of-twelve shooting. Monica Alexander contributed five points but also grabbed eight rebounds and handed out eight assists. Laura Marquardt finished with eight points on three-of-five shooting while Ashley Marine came off the bench and nailed three treys for nine points.
Ingrid Easter led Catawba with 12 points and had a team-high four steals. LoSauro finished with 11 points and was three-of-four from the three-point line.
The Lady Indians will make the short trip to Clinton, S.C. as they face rival Presbyterian. Tipoff is set for 2:00 pm.
