Men's Soccer defeats Brevard, 3-2, in overtime

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Indians defeated Brevard College in overtime, 3-2, thanks to Jeffrey Taylor's 94th minute game-winning goal.

The win pushes Newberry to 6-4-0 on the season, while Brevard is still searching for its first win of the season.

Brevard opened the scoring in the 21st minute, as forward Kyle Hamilton found his way behind the Indian defense and slotted the ball past Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.)

The Indians didn't take long to respond, as Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) found Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) off a free kick. Ogunseye's shot found the side netting in the 28th minute to tie the game at 1-1.

Ogunseye punished the Brevard defense again in the 68th minute, as his shot was handled in the penalty area. The foul gave him a penalty kick which he calmly scored to put Newberry ahead, 2-1.

But the Tornados struck back with a spectacular shot from inside the center circle by Hamilton that caught Newberry backup goalkeeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) off his line, and tied the game at 2-all in the 70th minute.

Neither team found the goal again until 4:21 into the overtime, although Jeff Bell (North Augusta, Ga.) hit the crossbar in the 94th minute. Ogunseye continued the attack and sent a low cross from the right side in the 95th minute that Taylor pounded home to seal the victory.

The game was the second conseuctive match in which Newberry was forced into overtime, and their third in the last four matches. Ogunseye's five-point performance sent his total to 20 on the season, to lead the team.

Newberry returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday, as the Indians host Catawba College at 4 p.m.
