Lady Indians can't keep up with Lady Pacers

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. It was another rough outing for the Lady Indians Tuesday night as the scarlet and gray lost in three games to the University of South Carolina-Aiken Lady Pacers three games to zero.

The teams played at different ends of the spectrum in game one, with USC Aiken (16-3) capitalizing on Newberry (2-15, 1-4 SAC) errors and miscues. The Lady Pacers had 11 kills on 28 total attacks in game one while committing just one error. Conversely, Newberry managed 16 kills, but surrendered 12 errors on 47 total attacks despite junior Cara Colemans six kills.

As the match slid into the second frame, the caliber of play from both sides began to dip. The Lady Pacers held just a one point lead, 19-18, after Coleman recorded her eighth kill of the night. USC Aiken then churned out an 11-1 run to close out game two.

Though the Lady Pacers led the entire length of the third game, Newberry stayed close until the end. Down 22-18, freshman Lorena Maia was fed a perfect set from fellow freshman Kilee Ruppe for a kill that won back the serve. Coleman slammed home another Ruppe set and Newberry pulled within two, 22-20.

After a 7-1 run from USC Aiken to give the Lady Pacers match point, Newberry made things difficult. Coleman, junior Laurie Barman, and senior Jessica Lipsi tallied three consecutive kills followed by another Barman kill sandwiched between three Lady Pacer attack errors.

However, the comeback was not meant to be as left-handed middle hitter Laura Williams picked up her ninth kill for the Lady Pacers on the way to a 30-27 game three win.

For the Lady Indians, Coleman finished the night with 13 kills along with a pair of digs and a solo block. Lipsi also cracked double digits with 10 kills and Maia garnered nine.

The freshman trio of Jennamarie Lesky, Kilee Ruppe, and Marla Messer combined for 28 digs with Ruppe also chipping in 33 assists.

The Newberry College Lady Indians visit Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
