Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. � The Lady Indians fell three games to one, losing to Carson-Newman College Saturday morning despite battling back to win game three after being down two games.
Newberry lost games one and two by game scores of 30-20 and 30-25. After a spirited game two from the Lady Indians, head coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta�s squad used that momentum to capture a victory in game three.
Carson-Newman proved to be too strong for the scarlet and gray in the end. In a 30-21 game four win, the Lady Eagles totaled 16 kills and just four errors in 26 total attacks.
Senior setter Kari Gibson played a good all-around game for the Lady Eagles accounting for nine kills and 40 assists while registering six digs, two service aces and a block assist. Junior Kelli Sorensen led Carson-Newman with 17 kills and 10 digs.
The Lady Indians received solid play from Brazilian hitters Jessica Lipsi and Lorena Maia. Lipsi, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, led the scarlet and gray with 14 kills on 40 total attacks and also shoveled out 11 digs.
Maia, a freshman from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, hammered out 13 kills and fired six service aces.
In her first extended action of the season, freshman Marla Messer racked up nine digs and four kills in three games.
Senior setter Jessica Lopez finished the morning with 29 assists and eight digs.
The Lady Indian�s next match comes Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Eleazer Arena against USC Aiken. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
