Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry Lady Indians dropped their second South Atlantic Conference match of the season, 1-0, to the Wingate University Bulldogs on Saturday.
Freshman Madi Welch's unassisted header in the 51st minute provided the winning margin for Wingate (8-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 SAC). Newberry falls to 5-4-1 overall, and 1-2-1 in conference play.
The first half was largely a midfield battle, with neither team earning a shot on goal in the run of play. The one shot on goal in the first half came from Wingate's Lisa Service on a free kick that Newberry goalkeeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) saved. Newberry had taken no shots before the half.
The offensive opportunities came more often for Newberry in the second half, but the Bulldogs were able to keep two shots by Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) out of the goal, despite goalkeeper Kathryn Smith being out of the net. Smith saved three shots, with two shots cleared by her defense.
Newberry outshot Wingate 10-6, with all 10 shots coming in the second frame. Wingate took one shot on goal in each half. Newberry earned six corner kicks to Wingate's one, and were caught offside 10 times.
The Lady Indians' next match comes on Wednesday, when they travel to Georgia to take on Clayton State for a 6 p.m. kick. The next home match for Newberry is next Saturday at 1 p.m., when the Lady Indians host SAC foe Tusculum.
Wingate hosts Mount Olive College on Wednesday, with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
