Tusculum wins 3-1 in Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. � Newberry College lost in four games Friday evening in a battle with Tusculum College despite winning the first game 30-25.

The Lady Indians (2-13, 1-3 SAC) got off to a great start against the Pioneers, holding Tusculum to a .018 hitting percentage while administering 22 kills at a .308 clip. In game one, the scarlet and gray were led by junior Laurie Barman�s seven kills.

Over the next three games Tusculum (13-4, 3-1 SAC) clawed out early leads to game scores of 30-25, 30-24, and 30-26.

The Pioneers received powerful play from junior Vivian Lacy. The Lacey, Wash. native peppered Newberry with 53 attacks, hammering down 19 kills in the match. Freshman outside hitter Gina Coffaro pitched in 11 kills and junior setter Stacy Ray tallied 45 assists.

The Lady Indians valiant effort translated into four players registering double digit kills. Barman finished the night with a team-high 16 kills with just four errors. Freshman Lorena Maia totaled 42 attacks notching up kills on 14. The Belo Horizonte, Brazil native also chipped in 10 digs, three block assists and two service aces.

Fellow Brazilian and senior Jessica Lipsi churned out 10 kills and nine digs while junior Cara Coleman accounted for 12 kills on 21 total attacks with just two attack errors. Coleman was solid on the defensive end picking up a solo block and two assisted blocks.

Freshman Kilee Ruppe assisted on 36 kills while also snuffing out six digs to go along with a solo block and a block assist.

The Lady Indians clash with the Carson-Newman College Lady Eagles Saturday morning at Eleazer Arena with first serve coming at 10 a.m.
