Lady Indian volleyball loses 3-0

 HARROGATE, TENN. � With Lincoln Memorial University set to join the South Atlantic Conference as a full member next year, the Newberry College Lady Indians volleyball team have a reason not to like the long haul over to Harrogate, Tenn. The Lady Railsplitters won their fifth consecutive match Tuesday night, beating the scarlet and gray in three games with scores of 30-16, 30-16, and 30-27.

 

For Newberry (2-12, 1-2 SAC), the freshman duo of Lorena Maia and Kilee Ruppe led the attack. Ruppe dished out 20 assists while Maia tallied a team high seven kills.

 

On the defensive side of the net for the Indians, only Maia was able to come up with double figure digs, recording 10 on the night. Freshman Jennamarie Lesky and junior Cara Coleman each snuffed out eight digs and junior Laurie Barman added a solo block and two block assists.

 

For Lincoln Memorial (11-3), Amanda Horencamp and Joy Otto led the offensive attack with 11 kills each, while setter Amber Vanderlin ran the offense handing out 34 assists.

 

Defensively Blythe McCulley, Horencamp, and Jency Basinger denied the Indians the most.  McCulley recorded 16 digs, while Horencamp had 13, and Basinger 10 en route to the Lady Splitters eleventh win of the year.

 

The Lady Indians return home to Eleazer Arena with a Friday evening match with Tusculum College slated for a 1 p.m. start.
