Lady Indians bitten by Bulldogs

NEWBERRY, S.C. � Newberry College fell to 1-2 in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action to Wingate University Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs (10-4, 3-0) stayed undefeated in conference play taking a three game victory with scores of 30-14, 30-21 and 30-23.

The Bulldogs fired on all cylinders in the first game notching up 17 kills in 33 attacks with just two errors. The .455 hitting percentage in game one was fueled by freshman Jacki Emmenecker�s five kills in nine chances with a solitary attack error.

For the match, Wingate received solid play from senior hitter Lauren Alley. The Bristol, Tenn. native attacked at a .455 clip, registering 12 kills on 22 attacks. Alley also chipped in six digs and four assists.

Junior Melissa Deluca played a very effective game at setter on the way to a 38 assist day.

The Lady Indians struggled on the attack Saturday, only garnering 33 total kills. Newberry was hindered by 17 attack errors, nine service errors, and two blocking errors.

Junior Laurie Barman was the only Lady Indian to reach double digits in kills with 10. Fellow junior Cara Coleman tallied nine kills on the afternoon along with three digs and a service ace.

Freshman Kilee Ruppe dished out 25 assists, earned six digs, and accounted for one kill.

The Lady Indians next play in Harrogate, Tenn. against the Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters on Tuesday Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. Newberry returns to Eleazer arena Friday Sept. 22 for a 7 p.m. clash with Tusculum College.
