Men's Soccer defeats Belmont Abbey, 4-1, with second half comeback

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Belmont Abbey College Crusaders jumped out to a first half lead, but the Newberry College Indians answered with a second half barrage to earn the 4-1 victory in men's soccer action on Tuesday.

Newberry's Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter) led the way for his team with five points on two goals and an assist. The goals were his first and second of the season.

The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute, when midfielder Nick Wyatt played a perfect through ball ahead to Luis Arrieta, who calmly put the ball in the left side of the net past Newberry goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) from about 10 yards out.

Newberry (2-0-0) had its chances early though, as offensive pressure earned them six first half corner kicks to the Abbey's one. The Indians got off 11 shots in the opening stanza, but were unable to find the net with any of them.

After a one-hour lightning delay in the 53rd minute, all of that would change. The Indians attack finally came together over the last 30 minutes to earn them their second consecutive victory of the season.

Taylor tallied Newberry's first goal in the 67th minute, after defender Sam Cartin's shot was saved by Belmont Abbey keeper Brian Alenky, who parried the ball off the cross bar. Taylor headed the ball into the right side of the goal to tie the match.

Jeff Bell (North Augusta) earned the game-winner in the 73rd minute off a Newberry corner kick. Taylor lofted an in-swinging ball to the far post, where Bell was able to head in his second goal of the season.

The insurance goal came on a brilliant piece of individual awareness, as Taylor stole the ball about 40 yards from goal just seconds after play resumed following Bell's goal. Seeing Alenky off his line, Taylor sent a speculative shot towards goal that was able to extend Newberry's lead to 3-1 just 27 seconds after the previous goal.

Freshman forward Philip Tanner (New Hope) opened his Newberry scoring account in the 85th minute. After receiving a pass from Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) on the right wing outside the penalty box, Tanner blasted a low, line-drive shot. Alenky was able to get just a finger to it, but was unable to keep the goal from the back of the net, providing the final score.

The Indians will aim to extend their unbeaten season as they head to West Virginia to face off the Shepherd Rams on Saturday. Kickoff in Shepherdstown, W. Va. is at 1 p.m. Belmont Abbey hosts UNC Pembroke on Friday, with a 4 p.m. kickoff
