Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

SALISBURY, N.C. The #10 Catawba College Indians (28-5 overall, 9-0 South Atlantic Conference) swept a three-game weekend series with Newberry College. Newberry falls to 6-24-1 and 0-9 in conference play.

Game 1 (11-1)
In the opener, Catawbas Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, N.C.) worked out of a first inning jam and went on to toss seven innings, allowing just a single run on six hits with eight strikeouts.  Following a soft single center, Newberry put together a pair of infield hits around a sacrifice to load the bases, but Smith got a strikeout and a liner to end the threat, helping the sophomore improve to 8-1.

Sands delivered a two-out, two-run single in the first to put Catawba on top and the Indians added five in the third to break the game open.  Nick Lefko (Faith, N.C.) capped the frame with a three-run homer.

Newberry picked up its run in the fourth as Ryan Easterby (Charleston, S.C.) led off with a double and scored on a two-out double by Brandon Gardner (Gaffney, S.C.).  Chad Baker (Jamestown, N.C.) extended Catawbas lead to 9-1 with a two-run homer in the fifth and David Thomas (Winston-Salem, N.C.) added a solo homer in the sixth.

Game 2 (12-0)
Catawba stretched the lead to 8-0 in the fourth, taking advantage of two walks and three hit batters to plate six runs.  Jerry Sands (Clayton, N.C.) delivered a solo homer to start the scoring.  Freshman Blake Ketner (Davidson, N.C.) tossed a four-hit shutout for the Tribe, walking one and recording six strikeouts.  Anthony Dillinger (Gaffney, S.C.) had two hits for Newberry.

Game 3 (15-4)
Newberry struck in the first as Joel Keefe (Andover, Mass.) singled in Dillenger. Catawba responded with three in the second as Chad Baker (Jamestown, N.C.) picked up a RBI single, Noah Johnson (Huntersville, N.C.) drew a bases-loaded walk and Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, N.C.) reached on a fielders choice.

Sands blasted a solo-HR in the third to give Catawba a 4-1 lead, but Newberrys Matt Webb (Cheraw, S.C.) would cut the deficit in half with his solo blast in the fourth. A long ball from Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, N.C.) and a Baker sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Catawba a four run advantage before adding a three spot in the sixth on Mark Smiths two-run double and Sands RBI two-bagger.

Newberry would add two in the seventh as Webb picked up a RBI double with Levi Salters (Vincennes, Ind.) scoring on a Catawba error. Catawba's Smith had a two-run single, part of four-run seventh for Catawba. Lefko sent a solo homerun to left in the eighth to close things out.

For Newberry, Keefe went 4-for-5 with a RBI. Matt Smith went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Lefko had a pair of hits and two RBI for Catawba. Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, N.C.) picked up his sixth win of the season. Will Folk (Charleston, S.C.) took the loss for Newberry.

The Indians will play their third home game of the year at the Newberry High School baseball field tomorrow, hosting West Virginia State University at 3 p.m.  WVSU will return for a Thursday game, and both will be available by audio broadcast at www.newberryindians.com.
