Indians dominate Cobras, 8-1

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College women's tennis team jumped to an impressive start Thursday afternoon, sweeping all three doubles matches and winning five of six singles matches to handle Coker, 8-1, at the R. Wright Cannon Courts.

Racquets were on fire as Newberry's numbers one, two, and three doubles pairs defeated Coker.  No. 1 doubles Isabel Kreidler and Bethany Poppe defeated Coker’s Andrea Santos and Jill Smith 8-5.  Newberry’s Tanea Miller and Lauren Hartley earned the win in the No. 2 doubles spot against Cassidy Spencer and Neely Davis, win a final score of 8-6.  The duo of Brittany Grooms and Chanelle Clare worked together to shut out the Coker doubles teams with a 8-4 win over Jen Konopa and Ashley Schaum in the No. 3 doubles match-up.

With the doubles matches down the ladies now had to focus on their one-on-one efforts. The Cobras' Santos took Kreidler to three sets before the Indians’ No. 1 singles player pulled through with the victory.  Hartley, Clare, and Miller held their Coker opponents to two sets in their wins during the No. 2, 3, and 4 singles matches.  As with Kreidler, Poppe had to battle back for the win as she was taken to three sets in her match-up against the Cobras’ Konopa.  Coker was able to record one win though as Grooms was forced to default giving Schaum from Coker the win.

The ladies won all eight of the matches that they competed in and won eight of nine of their total matches on the day.  Newberry’s next action will be at home at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 2o against Presbyterian College.
