Lady Indians motor to 20-point victory over Augusta State

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Lady Indians continued their strong play on Thursday evening, blowing past Augusta State University 66-46 at Eleazer Arena for their seventh consecutive victory. The Lady Jaguars (4-2) played a poor first half, shooting just 19.2 percent from the floor and were down 29-15 at the break.

After Newberry (7-0) pushed the lead to 20 at the 19:10 mark of the second half, Augusta State went on a 19-5 run capped off by a Brittany Jarrard lay-up to close the lead to six, 40-34.

Directly after a Newberry timeout, a streaking Monica Alexander fed freshman Brennen Long in the right corner who then buried a jumper. Then on the ensuing possession for Augusta State, Alexander picked off Lady Jaguar Jasmine Godwin's pass and fired the ball to Carnicha Bellinger who kissed it off the glass while being fouled. The sophomore forward cashed in on the free throw, completing the old fashioned three-point play and boosting Newberry to a 45-34 lead in just 1:10 of play.

The Lady Indians capitalized on the momentum and went on a 21-12 run to end the game.

Bellinger finished with 16 points on 6-12 shooting and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Junior forward Tonique Frasier scored 14 for the Lady Indians and Brennen Long rebounded from a tough game against Claflin on Tuesday with nine points and five boards.

Godwin led the Lady Jaguars off the bench with 10 points and Shirrell Ford snagged a team high 12 rebounds.

The Lady Indians catch a break in the schedule with the next game scheduled for December 6 at Eleazer Arena versus Limestone College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
